"Reiki" means Universal Life Energy

Reiki, a gentle, non-invasive healing energy, has the capability of relieving pain, healing the body and reducing emotional trauma. For those with acute or chronic conditions, Reiki can provide significant pain relief, speed up the healing process and can be used in conjunction with traditional medicine. Reiki brings about body harmony, emotional and physical clearing. In addition to its healing capability, Reiki can also promote a greater sense of vitality while reducing stress.

We have received many endorsements to the incredible benefits of our Reiki work, especially for treating conditions that were not responsive to traditional medicine.

The Miracle of Reiki

Where to start with my tale of Reiki? How about … with who I am and what Reiki has done for me? My name is Patricia Barry Rumble. My friends and family call me Trish. I have a practice of Neuromuscular Release Therapy in Houston. Ordinarily I spend most of my time talking about neuromuscular therapy because it’s so much easier to explain. Reiki, which is an energy work, is obviously much more difficult to explain. If I tell you Reiki is "hands on healing," Touch Therapy or that Reiki opens up the chakrahs, unblocks the meridians, taps into the universal field of energy, that it comes from God, then that all sounds so esoteric, rather … what can I say … weird. In fact, when someone first suggested that I take a course in Reiki, I countered with, "What is that, some kind of New Age crap?" I was as you might suspect just a little hostile, just a little angry and not exactly opened minded. However, I took the class … and as things go, Reiki changed my life.

Reiki is one of the most incredible healing tools that I know of. It works on mind, body and spirit … and anyone can do it. Old people, young people, anyone.

On a personal note, Reiki helped me when I was at my lowest. I was very depressed … so depressed that I really didn’t want to be here on this earth. I had cratered as a writer which meant that I had no more ego. I could no longer say, "Oh, I’m writer." I felt that life wasn’t much worth living since I couldn’t write any more. I owed a lot of money and despite the fact that I had a great family and some very good friends, I couldn’t seem to get out of my depression. My life was totally out of balance. I had lived, breathed and done nothing but write to the exclusion of my family and my health. And one day my life all unraveled.

Just for the record. I am an awarding-winning playwright with 8 plays for children which have been widely produced and are now published. For my play Breaking Out of Sunset Place, I won the Texas Playwrights Festival in 1994. This full-length comedy had its World Premiere at 7 Angels Theatre in Waterbury, Connecticut in 2001. In 2002 my comedy The Ransom of Red Chief had its premiere Off Off Broadway at Vital Theatre. I have had readings of my plays in NY and LA, including an excerpt of Au Revoir, Chère Bébé, my Cajun drama, at the Robey Theatre last season.

I never in my wildest dreams pictured myself as a healer. You see, what I thought I wanted to do was touch people’s lives with my work. What I didn’t realize was that … what I really wanted … was to touch people on many levels and help them heal. Very similar aspirations, only the healer role with Reiki has more tangible, immediate and measurable results. You know instantly that people are getting better. With a play you may indeed influence people’s lives but you may never know this unless someone in the audience tells you.

Well, the reason I am talking on about me is to give you concrete examples of how Reiki has touched my life ... and of those I have worked on. Most people are rather "results-oriented" and I am, too. Rather a "doubting Thomas." Show me and then I’ll believe you. But first give me proof. If you can’t prove it, then go away. That’s pretty much what I’ve always believed. Well, up until recently.

But I digress. Let’s get back to Reiki and some explanation of how it works. In Reiki I, the first level you receive about 20% of the healing energy so that you can develop a feeling of the flow of the energy. It’s very subtle. When you first begin to do a session on yourself or others, it could take up to 2 hours. Yes, that is a long time. Now I can do a session in about 30 minutes, depending on the seriousness of the situation.

The Success of Reiki

Since it is easier for me to give examples of what Reiki does, let’s begin with some examples of the healing power of Reiki.

The first time I knew that Reiki really worked was in massage therapy school I had just had the first level course but it was so slow. 2 hours is a long time to spend on yourself or others. And I began to doubt that Reiki really worked. One morning when I awakened, I thought "This Reiki stuff is crazy. I’m just imagining the ebb and flow of energy. I just want to believe it and I’m making it happen. So I don’t believe it. It’s all in my mind.’" Then off I went to massage school. Of course, that day was a day of reckoning for me. At school there was a young girl named Becca who had had shoulder surgery several years before and sometimes it still hurt. So there I was. Becca was hurting and the only thing I knew to do was Reiki. So I put my hands on her shoulder and my hands got very hot. I must have had my hands on her shoulder for a good 5 minutes when the director of the school came in. Darlene, who is a very "touchy feely" kind of person. "What are you doing?" "Reiki". "Reiki, what’s that?" And I begin to explain as best I could. In the meantime, Becca is lying on the table, I still have my hands on her shoulder and Darlene leans on Becca’s leg with her hand as she was talking. And all of a sudden, she got a strange look on her face and said, "What’s that?" Suddenly she jerked her hand away violently and cried out as if in pain. She stood there, shaking her hand. Later when I called my teacher in Austin to ask what might have happened. She said that Darlene as healer absorbs energy and basically what she did was short circuit the energy. She absorbed the energy all at once in her own body because she wasn’t grounded. At that point I knew that Reiki was indeed real and just how powerful the energy could be. The good news for anyone who has had the Reiki class is this: when you have Reiki, you are grounded ... for life.

After that, I could hardly wait the 90 days to take Level II Reiki. You see, you need that time to work with the energy and feel the subtle changes, so that you develop a feel for the ebb and flow of the energy. With Reiki, level II, you get 100 % of the energy and now you can work on a person’s mind, body and spirit. And that’s what I needed. With Level II you can also do long distance healing, but I‘ll get into that one a little later.

No sooner had I had taken Level II when I got a call from a woman, Victoria, who made an appointment. Her sister, a nurse in Iowa who only had level I, told her to find a Reiki Practitioner who could do Level II. Victoria was in extreme pain from an impinged radial nerve in her right elbow. This had been going on for 6 months. There was talk of surgery to correct the problem but it would be difficult. This was especially traumatic, not just because of the pain, but because she had played the guitar for 30 years and could no longer play. So imagine if you will that I had never done a full body Reiki session I or II and here was a woman in extreme pain. And I’m thinking I can’t do this. But I did. I trusted that things would work out and I begin the session. When I got to her painful elbow, I cupped the elbow rather like a sandwich and my hands begin to heat up instantly. I don’t remember how long it took. But it wasn’t long when her entire arm jerked, bounced and she cried out. And I’m thinking. "Oh, my God, I’ve killed her. I didn’t think you could kill some one with Reiki. It’s only for good." Then, she began to sob and said, "The pain’s gone. It was just like the pain when I had the injury, only it went the opposite direction, up and out. The pain’s gone." Well, that was a very humbling day. She was out of pain and when I called that next week to see how she was, she told me that she had played her guitar for the first time in 6 months. She came for 3 more treatments and she was well. No trace of pain.

When doing a Reiki session, I can only say that I feel a sense of bliss, as if I am in the presence of God. I’ve been told that Reiki is from God, that you tap into the universal source of energy or God’s love. And that’s what it feels like. It feels like love. The beauty of Reiki, well at least one of the most incredible aspects of Reiki, is that when you do Reiki for another person, at the same time you’re getting healed yourself. So Reiki is a "twofer" (two for the price of one.) They’re getting healed and you’re getting healed. What a great deal!

I have only had good experiences with Reiki. Reiki protects you. It protects the therapist or the person giving Reiki. You are protected from other people’s negative energy. I think that Reiki actually converts negative energy to positive energy. You know how a mountain stream purifies water, Reiki does the same for energy. Because it works on a molecular level, Reiki can stop cancerous tissue from multiplying and metastasizing. Reiki can promote the growth of healthy tissue and at the same time rid the body of harmful toxins. The body has an enormous capacity to heal itself when given the proper tools. Reiki is one of those tools. Good nutrition and a positive attitude also play important roles.

Reiki works on the chakras to unblock them. Sometimes when I am doing Reiki, it feels like there’s a little racer inside the person's body, a Speedy Gonzales racing up and down. And sometimes it feels like … or I get an impression of an American Indian woman weaving a rug. Healing, weaving, healing and the tissue is rebuilding. As she weaves, the tissue heals.

I have experienced a number of very dramatic examples of the healing power of Reiki - some of those examples are dealing with animals. By the way, there is no placebo effect in animals. You can’t tell an animal, "I’m going to do Reiki on you now and you’re gonna get better and the animal thinks itself well." It doesn’t work that way with animals. Something either works or it doesn’t. And that brings up another point about Reiki. It either helps you heal or it assists in transition. In other words, if you’re too far gone, then it makes transition easier.

So having said all that, here is my tree frog story. Many years ago at my son’s school carnival, a bunch of kids were sitting at a picnic table. One of the kids found a tree frog, a little bitty tree frog. And that frog looked like it was not long for this world … it was a goner. I didn’t have much hope for him. However, I said to the kids, "Let’s see if we can make him better, okay?" And I’m thinking, "Well, it’ll either get better or we’re help it leave this world a happier frog." So as the kids watched, I made a house for the frog with my hands. From my vantage point I couldn’t see the frog but I left my fingers open slightly so the kids could see. That frog was not moving when we started. As we sat there, with me giving Reiki to the frog while the kids are watching, the next think I know one of the kids says, "Hey, the frog’s moving." That was encouraging to me. Then I hear, "Hey, he’s sitting up. Hey, he hopped." Very exciting for me. I think all this took about 5 minutes. So, apparently the frog wanted to stay a little while longer. Otherwise, he would have transitioned faster. It was very remarkable. We saved a little bitty frog.

Then there was Barnaby Jones, the alley cat. This happened a number of years ago. I got a call from my neighbor asking me if I had a black cat. There was a black cat that had been hit by a car and had been lying on the sidewalk in the rain since that morning, about 11 hours. I went right out to check on the cat and found it. It wasn’t my cat and it was severely injured, barely alive and in shock. I brought the cat inside wrapped in a blanket. It smelled of urine and its breathing was very shallow. I held the cat and begin doing Reiki on it. At the same time, I asked my husband to see if he could find out who the cat belonged to. It took about an hour for him to locate the owner, a woman down the street. All the while I was doing Reiki on the cat. It felt as though he had trauma to the head, the heat was so intense in his head. Perhaps his jaw was broken or maybe a concussion. When Janice finally arrived, we talked for a long time about her life and a little about the cat, Barnaby Jones. Another hour went by and he was getting stronger. She opted to take him to an emergency animal clinic. The vet treated him for a broken jaw, a concussion and trauma. He survived. Yes, Barnaby Jones survived. He too wanted to stay awhile longer.

I like to tell these stories so that people can have concrete examples of the healing power of Reiki.

I have had a number of quite remarkable recoveries using Reiki. One of the most dramatic and fastest was reversing a woman’s nerve damage in her hands and feet.

Sheri H. – a CPA, mother of a one-year old child, who five months before had suddenly lost the feeling in her hands and feet. Sheri’s hands and feet were numb and tingling. She had difficulty driving because she could not feel the pedals of the car. When she cooked, she sometimes burned her hand because she could not feel the heat. Exploring all possibilities for recovery, she had gone to a neurologist who had tested her for nerve damage. She tested positive. She had nerve damage but after an exhaustive battery of tests the physician could find no discernible cause for this nerve damage. She was among the 20% of the population who have nerve damage - with "no known cause." Sheri was desperate. When I spoke with her on the phone, I suggested Reiki. I informed her there were no guarantees and suggested four treatments to see what would happen. In the first treatment that lasted two hours she got back 70 % of the feeling, primarily in her feet. By the second treatment she had gotten back even more and by the fourth treatment she had it all back. Her feet and hands were no longer numb. She was normal. She is living her life free from nerve damage.

You can also do long distance Reiki on people, by the way. For me, the most significant time, using long distance was on my aunt, my mother’s identical twin sister, Belle, whom we called Auntie.

Auntie had been very fragile for a long time, with congestive heart failure and kidney failure. Six ago this Christmas, I got a call from my Mom that she left on my recorder saying, "Honey, Auntie is not long for this world. She’s bad. Her time is near. " And Mom was crying. It was late and I immediately started doing long distance on Auntie. I called my teacher in Austin and asked her to help, to call every Reiki II practitioner she could to send my aunt Reiki so she could pull through. I went to bed feeling like there was hope. The next morning I drove to Beaumont, sending Reiki the entire time. When I arrived in Beaumont, my brother had just come from the hospital and he said that Auntie was a little better. I rushed to the hospital and my four cousins were there. They said the doctor told them that there was no hope. It was just a matter of time. I called my friend Denene in Port Arthur who also does Reiki and asked her to come in and help me work on my aunt. First, I had to get my cousins’ permission. They were not open to it but I told them, "Look, what do you have to lose? If there’s no hope, what will it hurt?" So, they let us work on Auntie and for two hours we did Reiki. Guess what? Yes, she got a little better.

In my aunt’s hospital room, it was easier for me to do long distance Reiki on Auntie. It was actually rather fun. I’d say, "Auntie, I’m working on you. Do you feel it?" And she’d say, "I do." Then I’d say, "Where?" and she’d say, "My back." And she was right. She did pull through that time. But she was weak. We had her with us for a year and a half longer. At 80 years old, she was tired; and she had so many things wrong with her and was on so much medication. So she left. She’s flying now. I know that because I feel her presence. I say, "Hi ya, Auntie." And she’ll say, "Hi, baby." I miss her physical presence. My mom joined Auntie 5 years later. On earth they were inseparable, the twins, Anna Mae and Anna Belle. Now they’re together again.

If the energy is coming from a higher source, which I believe it is, then it can help people heal. The Reiki practitioner is only a channel for the universal life force.

What’s more. I suggest to you that if you have a chronic condition that has not responded to conventional medicine, then you owe it to yourself to try Reiki. It’s up to you!

If you have a very chronic condition or a "terminal illness," in addition to traditional medical procedures, I recommend that you to take a Reiki class yourself and begin immediately working on yourself … at the same time you are being treated by a Reiki practitioner. As I said before, Reiki is a tool. Other factors to consider are nutrition, exercise and positive thinking.

However, if you do begin Reiki, then be prepared for a life change. Reiki can help change your life. It changed my life and it can change yours too.

I use Reiki extensively in my neuromuscular massage therapy practice, either as a Reiki treatment alone or in conjunction with a neuromuscular massage. Especially important for me as a therapist, is to know that "Reiki can only be used for good; at the same time it protects the therapist or person from another person’s negative energy."

"Having the desire to heal and taking action begins the healing process. Reiki augments and accelerates that process. To be truly healed, however, it is first necessary to forgive - to rid oneself of all anger and hate towards oneself and others. Total healing is indeed possible. With God's love, all things are possible."

I wish you wellness, peace, love and laughter.
